HOUDINI'S TRICK BOLTSOne of Houdini’s greatest mysteries involved him escaping from a Steel Box. Houdini exhibited a Solid Metal Box, a Steel Lid, and four bolts, nuts and Cotter pins. All were found to be legitimate. On each side of the box near the top was a hole for the bolt. The lid had matching holes. Houdini entered the Steel Box, and the lid was placed onto the box. Working from inside the box, Houdini then inserted four bolts through the bolt holes in the box and adjoining lid. Spectators then placed the nuts onto the bolts, and finally placed the Cotter pins through tiny holes in the bolts to prevent the nuts from being removed. Houdini was apparently trapped. A curtain hid the proceedings. A few minutes later, Houdini emerged – And the Steel Box and Lid was found to be still bolted shut with the Cotter pins still intact! In fact, the spectators could then undo the pins, unscrew the nuts, remove the lid, and all bolts, the box, lid – and everything was found to be still legitimate!
